Open letter to Google’s HELLO/Picasa team
I just found out today that the HELLO instant messenger service operated by Picasa (now owned by Google) will be shutting down on May 15th, 2008 June 11th 2008.
Unfortunately, I only found this out today (Monday, May 12th, 2008) by accident. I didn’t receive any email notice from the HELLO team about the service shutting down. Clicking any of the help links in the software brings you to the HELLO homepage.
This website was created as a last ditch effort to hopefully reach someone at Google to get them to keep this GREAT instant messenger service going. There truly is no instant messenger out like it.
My colleagues and I use HELLO every single day, all day long to stay in touch, share photos and screenshots instantly and to generally stay connected during our busy workdays. It has been our preferred way to communicate for several years now.
I’m hoping that I’m not the only one that desperately wants the HELLO service to stay active.
Although the HELLO service is free, the value that we’ve received from the service is priceless. We’ve never needed support. The software just “works”. I, for one, would be willing to pay for the HELLO instant messaging service to keep it active.
What you can do:
I don’t know if others are in the same boat, but I’m asking those of you who use HELLO daily to post in the comments below and hopefully we can get someone at Google to rethink the cancellation of this great service.
Also, please DIGG this story so hopefully we can get more attention drawn to this great service loss.
EDIT May 14 6:07PM: Thanks to commenter Melanie Morales for pointing out that HELLO has revised the homepage to note that the deadline for shutdown is now extended to June 11th. Hopefully that gives us more time to change their minds

I don’t know how we’d get through a day without Hello! Our offices and honchos are scattered about town and Hello is the only way we stay in constant communication. Rather than shut it down, why not charge for it? It’s a very important tool for our business!!

Hello is a great application with features found nowhere else. In an image-based industry, my co-workers and I constantly need to share visual information, either from the web or from our desktops, and Hello is hands-down the best platform we’ve found for this kind of communication. It’s been running rock-solid for years, and I haven’t seen any software that could fully replace it. Please don’t abandon such a useful tool.

First thing that came to my mind when I read that Hello is shutting down was “WHAT THE HELL!!!!”, I use it on a daily basis to communicate with coworkers that are at a different facility than I am, its super easy to use and when I need a quick answer Hello is always first choice. Please, please don’t take Hello away.
Google have you really thought about what you are about to do????

This application is our main communication with other departments and locations. To hear that it is shutting down three days from now has me a little peeved. I don’t see any call for this, whats the point? Thanks for complicating things!

I SOOO need HELLO! PLease dont let this go! This keeps me connected in office, from home, to my spouse, and I think its an awesome feature! My day is always got a HELLO from someone about something and its so great because i dont get SPAMED with IMs that are Pornographic or suggestive its just from those i want to talk to (unlike many of the other instant message options) PLEASE PLEASE rethink this option. Dont cut me off and leave me in the dark! I beg!! I plead!! I use the photo section for art questions, i use it to send links instantly to friends/co-workers. Its a necessity and i can imagine not having it available!!! Please please please reconsider!!!!!

I’ve bragged up Hello for months and months in the Picasa Help group. It’s the best program for sharing photos quickly and easily. It makes screenshots. Your chats are saved in the program. Photos can download automatically to another computer. It has flying smileys and other emoticons. It makes a cool picture-taking sound when sharing photos. You can preview the photos that you sent, or that someone sent to you - no need to go hunting around your computer to see what the photo looks like.
Best of all, you could use Picasa to select photos, then hit the “Hello” button to quickly share your photos. From there, you can select any number of friends and share the same photos at one time; there’s no need to re-select photos and send to friends one by one as with other instant messengers.
Hello shares full-sized photos which includes geo-tags, captions, and keywords.

Please keep Hello running. It was through this wonderful application that I’ve built a friendship that I consider priceless and would definitely hate to lose that in addition to the loss of ability to share pictures with my friends instantaneously.

Never before have I come across a program that did so much, with such ease. Hello was super easy to learn how to use, or to teach the non-computer-savvy how to use! There is no one program out there that can adequately replace the void that Hello will leave.

Will miss it so much.It was lovely easy way to keep in touch with family in UK from NZ.It was a wonderful application that my friends and I used daily and I was still recruiting new users upto quite recently.Please keep it.I find it too hard to learn other things!

By losing Hello we are losing a valuable teaching tool and photo sharing tool. It makes no sense why Google/Picassa would choose to go backwards technologically!

I am a disabled woman and I rarely ever get to get out of my home. I use hello to keep up on things that go on in my friends daily life that allows me to not feel so isolated. There really is no program out there like it and will be very lost without it. I would even be willing to pay an honest price for the opportunity to continue using this service…. Please reconsider your decision to close Hello as it will effect so many of my friends and I. It is a wonderful program, the best in my book, to keep my life from becoming menial.

Hello was a good way to say in touch with people and not have to worry about others. A lot of my friends have use HELLO to share things that we would not normally share over the net. HELLO will be miss unless there is a way we can save it….. PLEASE SAVE HELLO

Just thought I would note that today Hello’s message changed to say that is was extending Hello service until June 11th - maybe before then we can convince them to either keep it open or share the code making it an open source program… They wouldn’t have to support it - set up a forum for developers and people to share the tips, tricks, and support on. And it would keep it free! Just a thought…

OMG please dont shut this down. I so love hello and so do all my friends. Its hard to find a trusted site to share pics and files with others. This is the safest and fastest way for all of us. I would be willing to pay a small fee to keep it going and so would alot of my friends. I really hope they think about it more before going thru with it.

I think that closing hello is a very bad plan. all you are doing is giving business to other sites that a re coping what you did . And you did it great…I have looked into the other sites and they are all more complicated and do not work I personally will miss hello desperately. I was my only way to see pics of my grands in another state quickly. please rethink you plan to shut us down . a lot of us home bound people rely so on your site

I just found out about Hello about a month ago. I LOVE it. I have made some new friends in differnt parts of the United States and Canada, and have shared a lot of patterns and pictures. please we are all asking you to reconcider your decision about closing hello.i personally really am going to be lost without your site,hello has to me not only been a site where we can send and receive pictures with all my friends and family it is also a place i have gone and met many friends from all over and we have become so close at heart even though we were miles and miles apart, to me loosing hello is like loosing a big part of me ans i am sure others who use thsis program feel the same way as i do,your leaving is going to leave us witha void in our lives that no other site will ever fill. please please do not close!!!!!!!!!!!

I love Hello and would be so lost with out it. It keeps me to stay closer to my mom who lives 13 hours away. We use it every day and there are some great people that I have made into friends due to hello. It works so well with Picasa2 so please please don’t get rid of this GREAT program.

i am so sad to see that hello is going to be shutting down on june 11. i have use it from the time i t has come out and i have made so many good friends that use it and my family use it so we can keep in touch they live 2500 mile from me and this is the only way to keep in touch being so far away.so please is there any way you can keep hello going.

I am handicapped so travel for me is limited. Hello gives me my mobility by enabling me to stay in touch with family,friends and potential customers. I show my crafts that I make to help add to my income. Ebay is not an options as I appreciate how easy Hello is to use. Please do not shut down Hello. Surely there has to be another option. I would not mind banner advertising if that is what it would take to keep Hello open.

I use hello on a day to day to share with all my friends and family that use it. And think that if it closes. My family would have to use the mail to send pictures of the family to me and I wish that it not happen. I don’t nor does my family and hello friends want to see it go. I USE HELLO IN MY BUSINESS ON A DAILY BASIS. THIS PROGRAM IS EASY TO USE AND IS COMPATABLE WILL ALL COMPUTERS, IT WOULD BE A GREAT LOSS IF HELLO SHUTS DOWN. PLease reconsider the shutting down of hello. Several of us have used this programs for awhile as a means of sharing items with each other, making new friends and also talking to each other in stressful times of need. Man Google needs to rethink this altogether, shutting down hello will be a BIG MISTAKE, too many use it on an everyday basis myself included. If they want to take something away then take that stupid google talk which i’m sure not alot use it. Just my 2 cents worth, PLEASE KEEP HELLO!!!!!!!!!

I have used hello since the month they opened it many years ago and it is the best and only source of effiecient and effective photo sharing and messaging system in real time that there is. Where one friend can communicate with me fully on another messanger another can’t with all other messengers and we have tried them ALL believe me! So Either i have to have several messengers running at once to keep open lines of communication with everyone or I’ll have friendships severed and for what reason? Give me ONE GOOD REASON to destroy something so wonderful! I think google took it over and wants it gone to force onto google talk, well guess what they are being idiots they will just alienate most of use and it wioll have the adverse efffect of what they hoped to manipulate us into doing! They better rethink this tactic or it may backfire into a google service boycot of hello users.

I have used Hello ever since mom told me about it.. I love the fact that we can talk and send pictures real fast rather than emailing them. I talk on Hello like 24/7. Please dont get rid of it. I do not understand why’d you shut it down before having something IN PLACE that can emulate all the functionality…This is an invaluable tool in my business. Like others that are in an image-centric business, the functions of sending screenshots and images so effortlessly have been a lifesaver at times. Please reconsider getting rid of HELLO>

I wish you would consider NOT closing hello. I use hello to share photos, video, and chat with my family and friends, especially my sister who lives 1000 miles away from me. I have not seen my family in over two years and this is my open connection to them all day every day. I turn it on in the morning and I leave it on all day so we can be here if we need each other for anything, even just a simple hello and good morning. There are other messengers out there for sure, but none that works like hello. My friend, family, and I enjoy how the program works and how easy it is to set up and use. I know there are many people who use this program that are upset about you closing it. I really think you should reconsider this.

I think that Hello is an invaluable resource for sharing and learning. It offers an excepional, user friendly medium for those who are telecommuting, long distance learning or wanting to be in touch with friends and family far away.

Hello to whom is concern/Please!! dont shut Hello down becaouse Hello is a great application with features found nowhere else. wmy friends and I constantly need to share visual information, either from the web or from our desktops, and Hello is hands-down the best platform we’ve found for this kind of communication. It’s been running rock-solid for years, and I haven’t seen any software that could fully replace it. Please don’t abandon such a useful tool.Half of whom done wrote you are friends and familly and co-worker. and if we lose this its be a big holes in ours life, we always depend on hello being there, and you well be there always becaouse there no other site compare too your, please / please. donr shut down this site keep us conect too friend and family we never be able to do with out it. please. rethinks this over, remember you be here when all the other site gone, thanks for letting me talks this out , God bless you.

I wish you would reconcider shutting down this program,I have been using it for quite awhile now,I would be willing to pay my part to keep it open,have you concidered charging a small portion from each member you have that uses the program?I’m sure the outcome would be be great,the few people I have talked to about it said they would be willing to pay. I really cant believe that hello is closing i use it all the time to chat with friends share photos and patterns i think its great to have and i dont think it should be shut down . Why shut something down knowing that it works it dont make sense .I love this program so why do we all have to lose it. Iknow there are alot of other programs out there but not quite like hello its the best one i have seen

I was really sad to hear that Hello would be closed down. I have enjoyed this program for nearly two years now and it has helped me keep in touch with friends around the globe as well as participate in online continuing education classes. I love Hello! I too would be willing to pay a fee to keep it alive. There is truly no other messenger service like it at all, so why do away with something so unique? Just start charging a light fee as mentioned in other comments above.
This is a valuable tool for professional photographers, who can share instantaneous views of high res files and screen shots, and therefore help each other with photoshop and such. Please don’t take it away!

I can only echo what others say above, Hello is a superb messenger and pic sharer and I use it daily, i will be lost without it and would have to revert to something like Yahoo which is overblown and nowhere near as user friendly as Hello is!
Please rethink your decision to shut Hello, it will be sadly missed!

Hi there, I read some of the comments, and wanted to add my 2 cents for what it’s worth. I am on Hello everyday sometimes 24 hours a day, as I have friends I met all over the world, but also because I have a dissability that keeps me awake often. I realize that if we paid for the site, this would probably help a lot to save Hello, but with my very limited income, I’m not sure I could afford it, so I’m asking you to keep Hello opened for all of us as it’s a lifeline for me especially and I’m sure I’m not alone in this boat. I have been telling friends and family to come on hello as we share family and friends pictures and this is the fastest way I’ve ever found. Please Please, don’t close hello down. I’ve been feeling very down since it’s announcement, which came without notice. Thank you and have a great day. Francine

Uso o Hello todos os dias, há alguns anos.
Nele tenho contato com grandes amigas e tenho ajuda pro meu trabalho, já que vou mostrando a elas na medida em que faço.
Sem o Hello isso não mais será possível, já que não conheço outro comunicador com os mesmos recursos.
Por isso peço e espero que o Hello não seja extinto.

O hello representa para mim um meio de comunicação muito eficiente, rápido e fácil de usar.
O Picasa foi lançado mas não atende as expectativas de quem quer mostrar seus trabalhos apenas para um grupo de amigas.

I am requesting that you PLEASE don’t close HELLO down. I have had this program for several years and will be lost with out it. It is a nice way to keep up with family and friends. There is no other progam like it out that. Is so easy to use and just an all around program to have. Does Google really want to make this mistake? The only reason Hello doesn’t have a huge user base is because Google keeps it hidden away. Why? It is a great piece of software. If they had included it in the Google Pack it would be being used massively by now and there would be no chance that Google would be planning to “turn it off”. It integrates beautifully with Picasa and fills a need in the user community.
Google, unless you’ve got a better software up your sleeve, add Hello to the Google Pack now and stop threatening to turn it off! If you have got a better piece of software waiting in the wings then please tell the Hello community about it so we’ve got something to allay our fears.

Existem pessoas com quem tenho contato apenas pelo Hello. Sei que teriamos como mudar isso, mas o nosso contato pelo hello é tão gostoso, pois podemos ilustrar nossas conversas com fotos, imagens, desenhos o que não conseguiriamos em nenhuma outra forma de comunicação rápida.
Por favor, mantenha o Hello.

Hello is a great site for keeping in contact with friends and photos as well as sharing photos quickly between family and friends. Please don’t close it down as it is the only source of sharing photos with family and friends that most of us have.

Please reconsider and keep Hello alive. It is such a great IM program. An easy way to IM and share photos, etc. Do you realize how many senior citizens use this and what it means to them to get a IM from a grandchild, daughter, or son with a picture attached. It is a priceless communication tool to them and closing it, in my opinion, is rather cruel and heartless.

BOYCOTT GOOGLE UNTIL THEY REVERSE THEIR DECISION!!!!!
Hello everyone. Let us not forget that Google is not out to make the user community happy. Their goal is not to provide us with super-cool software out of the kindness of their hearts. They are in this game to make money, and Hello does not make them money. Their solution to the non-profit aspect of Hello is to ask users to open an account on a flickr-style site where users upload and download their pictures. They can place revenue generating ads on that site.
In order to get them to reverse this decision, Hello users need to make it not profitable for them to shut down the service. BOYCOTT everything google. Use a different email address (like yahoo.com). Use a different picture editting software! Stop posting to google forums. Don’t use Google to search with. (Yahoo has a decent search engine). And above all, don’t click on any google ads!
Google doesn’t seem to be listening to our emails, blog posts, letters, faxes, begging or pleading. They will listen their bottom line, though.

If Hello is closed it will be greatly missed. I pray you will reconcider closing this wonderful site. Why were you closing Hello. I have not seen a reason for it. I am sure you realize the number of people who use it and will miss it so much. As I said before, please don’t shut it down.

Please reconsider closing Hello. My daughter and I use it every day to exchange photos and to stay in touch. I honestly don’t know what I do without Hello.

Why are you closing Hello down? I hope that you reconsider. I have tried others and Hello is by far the best. I can’t imagine not having it. I share a lot of photos with family and friends through there plus it is a great way to keep in touch chatting. It is so easy to use. Please, please, please reconsider!

My 78-year-old computer illiterate ,other uses Hello all the time t stay in touch with all her grandkids scattered all over the country. It’s just so easy to use! The software runs great…I don’t understand why Google would close it down. Discontinue support for it or whatever, but leave it going! Easiest way around to keep in tuch and send photos back and forth. Goole providing software like this is why we all rely on them.

Olá,gostaria de lhes pedir para não tirar o hello do ar,pois com ele me relaciono com minhas alunas,inclusive fora do país deixamdo-as a par de tudo o que vem acontecendo aqui e uso-o profissionalmente para dar minhas aulas tb a estas pessoas distantes.
Adoro o hello,pois posso ter relacionamento interpessoal de imediato e posso ao mesmo tempo usá-lo profissionalmente.
Meu uso é diário.

Por favor ! Não tirem o Hello das nossas vidas. Desde que desbobri esse programa é o que tenho mais usado com meus amigos para troca de imagens e novidades. Acho que ao contrário do que estão querendo fazer, se vcs aprimorassem o Hello ele seria ainda mais usado. É no Hello que trocamos ideias, que contamos das nossas vidas, que mostramos aos amigos os ultimos acontecimentos importantes. Vcs já pararam pra pensar em quantos assuntos diferentes, quantas imagens, quantos fatos mostramos uns aos outros através desse programa maravilhoso ?
Não tirem essa ferramente das nossas mãos.

Não consigo imaginar o meu dia a dia sem o Hello ele me é útil em todos os sentidos pois é o ponto de encontro com amigos de várias localidades do mundo, onde podemos trocar informações sobre vários assuntos, temos a oportunidade de analisar os nossos trabalhos com os amigos instantaneamente através da troca de imagens o que engrandece e muito o nosso trabalho. Desde que descobri esta ferramenta de contato não tenho utilizado nenhuma outra e desconheço qualquer outro que seja igualmente útil. Por favor pedimos encarecidamente e de coração que não desativem o Hello. Muito obrigada.

Por favor,não tiem o hello,pois utilizo-o muito para relacionamentos interpessoal e pppara trabalhar profissionalmente.Tenho vários contatos nele,inclusive de brasileiros que estão fora do país e onde eu o utilizo par deixarem a parte dos acontecimentos pessoais e profissionais.

Hola a todos, es una lastima que quieran quitar este programa tan util para todos nosotros, ya que muchos dependemos de Hello para hablar con amigos de otros paises pasarnos fotos e imagenes, quisiera que recapaciten sobre esta idea y que sepan que lo que hicieron fue algo mas alla de lo creible, que conectan a miles de personas cada dia con algo tan lindo como es el Hello.
Por favor no lo cierren ayudenos a comunicarnos con otras personas.

I, too, am amazed that Google would even consider dropping what in my mind is one of their best-kept secrets. There’s certainly nothing else out there like it. I’ve looked long and hard and nothing even comes close. Hello has been an invaluable tool in getting my work done. Its extremely powerful, yet extremely simple to use. I can’t believe Google would even think that Google Talk, which is clunky & slow, could be considered a viable replacement for Hello. Nothing compares to the simplicity and ease of use of Hello. Google certainly has not pushed the product in making it known. Almost everyone I’ve introduced it to had never heard of it, although they were very familiar with other Google offerings. If Google continues with their plans to take Hello away, would they be willing to sell the code or make the code open-source? As many others have stated above, I, too, would be willing to pay for the product.

I am full deaf and I love Hello and I have many friends are using Hello and keep us open communicating, sharing pictures, make new friends,etc… Hello is more easy to use it than other websites. Hello is my quality and my priority!!! Please keep Hello running!! Do not close it at all. Thank you

Por favor, no cierren el hello, es muy útil, y fácil de usar, cada día mas personas lo conocen y reconocen su efectividad, es muy agradable hablar con alguien y ver fotos e imàgenes al mismo tiempo, y no tener que estar descargandolas como en otros programas.

Sad to see hello go. Only knew it for a few months but learned to love it very quickly. I especially liked the integration into PICASA, in fact, that was the only reason for me to install PICASA, without hello!, the other software becomes completely unnecessary for me…

I agree with the above comments. My family members are not computer savvy. But because of the simple user interface, we have been using hello for years. We all liked that it was encrypted as we are not into sharing our photos and comments to the whole world. We also liked the speed of the downloads even on slower internet links.
I don’t quite understand the exact reason google is shuting down the site. It appears to me to be just a P2P site and can not take that much bandwidth. I would be willing to even pay a small fee for the use of bandwith to keep our family safely sharing our personal pictures and comments.

It seems to this user of Hello that a shut down of Hello is the first step in taking what has become a free tool for ordinary people to a fee for its use. This is a good example of corporate greed and sly managers. Let us all give up with the Google habit and put this smell dissapate. Where is the application that can replace Hello and give this forum some success.
